Last month of the season -- here we go!!

I have to imagine the talk around most New England water coolers this morning will be focused on Jacoby Ellsbury's glove work last night -- and rightly so. If you'd like to see something equally impressive, be sure to check out this week's "Two Truths and a Lie" section below. Just as encouraging and impressive, however, was another solid performance by Jon Lester. If Beckett can turn around his recent struggles tonight against the Rays, you'd have to feel pretty good about our one-two punch in any playoff series (should we be so fortunate to make it).

Speaking of which -- right now we have a three-and-a-half game lead on the Rangers, and a six game lead on the Rays for the American League Wild Card. There's still a little more than a month left in the season, but our fate is in our hands at this point!

As for what's going on here in the Front Office these days…let's just say it's clear that we're coming to the end of the season, and people are getting a little loopy. Those of you who have jobs where you spend enormous amounts of time with your co-workers might know what I'm talking about. For example, it is in no way out of the norm these days to hear a co-worker randomly break out into song (see Aaron Neville, "I don't know much, but I know I love youuuuu"); nor is it the least bit unusual to hear an indiscernible tone (like the noise a pterodactyl might make) coming from the cubicle next to you; and there is certainly no shortage of ridiculous debate topics (i.e., whether or not naming one's cat after a character in "The Neverending Story" makes you a dork, dweeb, or nerd). Yes, all of the aforementioned things happen here. In fact, the above examples all happened in the last 10 minutes -- I'm not making this up.

But don't worry, I promise there are a lot of very talented, mature, incredibly intelligent people who work here... And in spite of the random serenades, shrieking pre-historic bird noises, and peculiar debates, everyone here is more dedicated than ever to doing whatever it takes to help this team make the playoffs and hopefully win another World Series championship! Here we go -- the final month of the regular season is upon us!!!

All the best from the Front Office,
The Voice of the Nation

p.p.s -- If you have any good loopy/crazy work stories/happenings you'd care to share, please pass them along. It may help us feel a little better about our sanity over here.

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE ABOUT RED SOX OF JOEY GATHRIGHT

1. Gathright once was punched in the face by former Red Sox pitcher Julian Tavarez.
2. Gathright can leap over a car in a single bound.
3. Gathright was once a bat boy for the Boston Red Sox.

GETTING TO KNOW THE KIDS

As of Monday, Portland Sea Dogs' lefty pitcher Felix Doubront's 2.90 ERA (10 ER/31.0 IP) in six August starts was his best in any month this season. The 21 year old Venezuelan improved his overall ERA to 3.37, third in the league and tops among Eastern League southpaws. Ranked third among qualifying league starters with a 7.83 K/9 IP ratio and third in the Sox system with 100 strikeouts.
